Fitness has been defined as the state of being able to physically perform activities and aspects of physical occupations. It is also the capacity to thrive in a healthy environment and to function well without any limitations. In other words, one’s ability to do things well and perform even minor tasks is termed as fitness. Physical fitness involves proper nutrition, sufficient rest, moderate-intensity physical activity and proper rest.

To achieve fitness, one must be physically fit to accommodate the human body’s changes as it grows and matures. It is through aerobic exercises, muscle strengthening, resistance training and flexibility exercises that a person is able to achieve the capacity to be fit. Aerobics helps to maintain a steady heart rate and thus maintains the right body composition and proper blood circulation. A high level of physical fitness results to the efficient processing of oxygen and nutrients in the body. Besides, it also helps to reduce stress.

Fitness training also helps to improve endurance and strength of the skeletal, muscular and vascular systems. To improve endurance, one must incorporate regular exercise into one’s life, which includes running, walking, jogging, biking, swimming, etc. These forms of exercise are known to improve different types of chronic diseases and help a person to remain active. Moreover, it reduces the chances of acquiring different types of chronic diseases, including diabetes, osteoporosis, stroke, colon cancer and Alzheimer’s disease.

The muscular system is another major component of fitness as it is through this system that the body gets its energy. Thus, muscular fitness improves overall health and prevents a number of illnesses, including obesity, heart disease, cancer and asthma. Stretching is also a part of fitness that helps to reduce tension in the muscles and hence prevents aging. Moreover, it keeps a person psychologically fit.

Aerobic fitness mainly focuses on increasing the lung capacity, which in turn improves endurance. It also improves the efficiency of the cardiovascular system in getting rid of calories. Besides, it develops the strength and improves the elasticity of the muscles. Aerobics training improves the strength of the cardiovascular and respiratory system, while simultaneously increasing endurance, muscle strength, and body composition.

Resistance training is an important aspect of fitness that develops the stamina, strength, power, endurance and muscle mass. It also increases cardiovascular and respiratory endurance and improves one’s overall health. Resistance training consists of various activities like weight lifting, bench press, dead lift, squatting, rowing, sprinting, bicycling, running, swimming, and skating. The resistance training program has been known to develop a person’s physique in a healthy and effective manner.
